Do Internet Entrepreneurs Sleep?

Recently, I was joking around with fellow bloggers Murray Lunn and Mark Bell recently by calling them Terminators from the future because of the amount of content they produce.  Those two guys are blogging machines!  But, it brings up an interesting question- As an internet entrepreneur, how much sleep do you get?

With all the rigors and distractions of everyday life (i.e. kids, a regular job, appointments, etc.) working on your growing internet empire is becoming increasingly difficult.  You have to maintain your family life and keep the significant other happy.  The kids demand attention and the occasional diaper change (if they’re little).

The great internet entrepreneurs are able to maintain both the everyday life events and the internet lifestyle by getting by on the least amount of sleep as they can and great organizational skills.  I know of some entrepreneurs who go to bed at around 2-3am and have to be up for the regular 9 to 5 by 6am.  While this may be the normal to some, to others, it’s incomprehensible.  “3 HOURS OF SLEEP?? I wouldn’t be able to function!” And they’re probably right.

I’ve read percentages as high as 50% of Americans are chronically deprived of sleep.  And I can imagine that as an entrepreneur, that percentage is much higher. I personally have been able to get by with a minimum of 3 hours of sleep.  But, I can only do that for a maximum of 2-3 days at a time before I pass out for the following 10 hours.

As entrepreneurs we are all creating, selling, marketing and doing wonderful things for our businesses.  But, we can’t hurt ourselves while doing it.  Here are a few tips to make sure that we’re able to get adequate sleep and perform at peak efficiency:

Plan a Specific Time for Bed

The days of partying and drinking until 4 in the morning have years since past by.  Nowadays for me, 12am is late.  Now, I will, however, stay up until 1 and sometimes 2am if I’m working on a project that I don’t want to lose momentum.  We all have those brilliant ideas in the late hours and we HATE to have to fight sleep to crank out that idea.  Sometimes, it’s better to let sleep win that battle.  Jot down a few notes and points that you want to pick up on the next day and go to bed.  Your dreams will probably enhance your thoughts when you jump back in tomorrow.

Turn off the Computer

Leaving your computer or laptop on after you’ve decided to go to bed is asking for trouble.  After you have committed to going to sleep, you get hit with another flash of brilliance that you need to add to that email or marketing campaign.  If your computer is still on, the temptation to run to it and that little gem that will put you over the top is high.  Don’t do it.  Go to sleep.  Your “greatness” can wait.

No Red Bull or Mountain Dew a Couple Hours before Bed

I don’t get this.  You should not be having any type of caffeine after 5 or 6pm.  You’re asking to stay up!  No caffeine after 6pm. End of story.

The point you need to understand is that as an internet entrepreneur, and to do your best work, you need rest.   There is no trade-off.  The point of caution is too much rest can make you lazy.  But, when you have a few dozen business ideas tossing around in your head, becoming lazy is not an option.  Just don’t deprive yourself of sleep.

So get out there and change the world.  Don’t forget to catch a few “zzzzz” in creating your empire.

Later.

The short answer: no. Which explains why I'm here perched over my pc at 3:00 A.M. when I have to go to work in the morning. It's almost like a disease, but I love it! I'll be paying for this in the morning!

Posting this at 2:30AM and I'm working on the other business all day tomorrow. Nope - no one needs sleep. It's way over rated.

Sleep is for the week. All Bloggers should invest in toothpicks you can use to keep your eyelids open.

Seriously though you are right. There is a lot of stuff to do online balanced with working a job/living a life it can seem a bit much. I am down to about 5 hours of sleep a night, but let me tell you, they are a good 5 hours where I am out like a light.

I always wake up refreshed and ready to check out what I have missed by being lazy and "sleeping" It is a good thing to have work that you actually love to do.

Ha ha! Insightful as always, Steve. Thanks :)

Hi Kevin
I'm glad I don't need too much sleep cos since I've started blogging in the past few months; time flies and before I know it I see it is way past my bedtime lol
Still I am loving it and hopefully once my blog is montezied and established I will hopefully be able to afford to outsource some of the things that take me longer than normal to do (insert all things techie in that space!!!) and just get on with writing and visiting other blogs to comment and interact.

Yeah, Patricia. Time does fly when you're having fun doing what you love.

I think I setup some kind of vicious cycle with my sleep habits because I actually get bummed out when I get 5+ hours of sleep - the next day when I wake up I feel really bad for taking that much time.

It was hard to pin-point exactly what I was trying to tell others but if you ever read Sex, Drugs & Coco Puffs it starts perfectly, it was something like:

Before you go to sleep, you feel like you know everything in the world but when you wake up, it's like you're starting from scratch.

In many ways, it dreads me to be out of the loop at times because knowledge is my most important asset; this is the main reason why I'm always at it.

Sure, I may not get everything I want done in the day but that's a lot of time delegation. I know that sleeping less is actually bad for my health but like the old saying goes "I'll sleep when I'm dead".

All of these extra hours are the result that when I get back from work, I damn well better get my time's worth during the day. If I'm trading time for money at work, I want to be able to take my free time and make it work for me instead.

I can't really give any tips to stay up late (although I did write a post about it a while back) but it mostly comes down to just training your body.

Since middle school to now, I've always had this polyphasic sleep schedule although it's a bit screwed; I generally go 3 hours of sleep a night and on every couple days I'll take a nap in the afternoon for an hour or so.

I just don't want to miss out on things in the end and if that means staying up really long hours than that'll be it.

In the end, it comes down to getting things done. All the time you spend staying up will be worthless unless you put it to good use, ya know?

You're right, Murray. The bottom line is getting things done for your business. Cause as I'm getting older, I need more rest. I wish I could live off of 2 hours of sleep and Mountain Dew like when I was in college. Having a 9 to 5 doesn't help matters, either. lol

Hey Kevin,

I believe that there are a lot of people who actually work a lot harder as entrepreneur than they would in a normal job. I just think this is part of being an entrepreneur. You can decide when you want to work. For me I always need to get some sleep. Ideal is around 7-8 hours. Once you are in such a rhythm it's hard to get up too late.

You're absolutely right, Julius. A person will usually work harder and longer from themselves than "the man" because you're investing in yourself. And when you're in a groove or rhythm, it's really hard to quit. Benn there, brother! :)

Rest is very important, you don't want to feel sluggish the next day at office or at college, getting an education first is far more important than earning for a living in my view, thus i study, blog, study and then sleep for next day's adventure.

Eat less starchy foods, avoid sugar and you will be good to go.!

LOL Kevin! Love this post. It is I, the Bloginator!

I know that regular sleep is very healthy for you. However, I find I can get back on remarkably little on a general basis. I can go to bed at 2am or so, and get up at 7.30 the next day no problem. Even when I occasionally get a lie in at the weekend, it's little after 9am <-- to a teenager, or normal person, that's not a lie in lol!

I think I've one of those mindsets that my mind is constantly active.

@Tom - I'll be a married man soon. But my fiancee and I have been living together for several years now, and she's quite used to me not sleeping at normal times. Provided I don't disturb her sleep, she's cool with it.

ANYWAY - back to the post...
Entrepreneurs are constantly striving to provide solutions. I find I do my best work at night. There are far fewer distractions. TV is crap, there is no-one on Skype in my time-zone - just my mastermind group. What I think is key, however, is that I enjoy what I do, so more often than not, time passes before I look at the clock.

It's as well I'm not a gambling man - Las Vegas would love me! lol

Yeah, you would fit right in in Vegas or New York (The City that Never Sleeps)! lol

Getting married fixes the time you go to bed. It used to be 4am, now it is more like 10pm! The good thing is that it has forced me to focus knowing that I do not have an unlimited time schedule.

Ha! Yeah that'll do it! I know how strict Mrs. Stand Out Blogger is! ;)

I'm having a hard time with this :( There's no reason for me to go to bed around 1a.m... then I wake up early and feel "bad". I've gotta get better about it.

Isn't Mark part insomniac??

Preaching to the choir, Moon. I still have that problem, but I've gotten better in the past couple of months. And, yes. I think Mark is part insomniac! ;)
