How to Increase Your Confidence in Blogging

Posted in Blogging by Kevin Douglas

You are the only person on Earth that can use your ability- Zig Ziglar

New bloggers go through it. Old bloggers go through it, but probably won’t admit it. It may not happen often, but it does happen.

What am I referring to?

Your confidence as a blogger.

Starting out, most would-be bloggers have that passion and drive to write blog posts everyday.  Then it goes to every other day.  Then, a couple times a week.  Now, you’re looking at the site once a month.  Next thing you know, you forget about the blog altogether.

This happened all because you lost your confidence in blogging.

How does your blog stack up against your favorite bloggers?  When I see my writing alongside heavy hitters, like Men with Pens, ProBlogger and others, I’m encouraged.  You will start to think that “Yeah.  I can do this.”  If  nothing else, seeing your blog with in a reader with other blogs is an ego boost.  And who the hell doesn’t need an ego boost?  Hell, we’re writers.  Some of us are geeky, tech writers.  We were the ones in school who didn’t fit in with the rest of the cool kids, but we studied hard.  We didn’t attend the big parties either because our parents didn’t let us go or we weren’t “people persons.” Fast forward to now.  We’re the cool kids and everybody showers us with approval.  (Well, you all.  Not me.  I’m still that geeky kid in a grown-up body.)

Confidence comes not from always being right but not fearing to be wrong.- Peter T. Mcintyre

We as bloggers and internet entrepreneurs don’t know it all.  Your readers will be the first to remind you of that.  No matter what niche or industry you’re in, there is always something new to learn.  I would almost guarantee that the “blogging gurus” learn something new everyday. The way they write, you would never know it unless they were forthcoming and transparent and told you.  I’m no expert and I have no problem confessing I don’t know everything.

Here are 3 quick tips to help with your confidence in blogging:

  • Subscribe to your own blog in an RSS reader, like Google Reader. I do this.  Why?  You really should want to see your blog how other sees it.  You are really invested and see it more than anyone else.  It gives me a fresh perspective when I see my blog in Google Reader.
  • Change how you write. Some experts suggest you start writing the post first.  The reasoning I’ve heard behind that is, the post may end up being different from what the original idea.  I tend to disagree.  I usually start with my title, first.  My reasoning is that I need a main idea to focus on.  If I just start writing without a goal, I could end up just about anywhere.  These are just two schools of thought to get your thought juices flowing.  Try both and see which works better for you.
  • Blog to network; not to make money. While you can make a few dollars here and there with your blog, it should not be the focus of your residual income strategy.  Now, if you’re using your blog to sell and promote your own products, then that’s a different story and that will greatly increase your confidence.  Once you figure out why you’re writing, then you’ll realize that it’s not a chore.

What do you do when you feel your blogging confidence is slipping?

I've had days when I have had absolutely no idea what I'm going to write. It takes one tiny thought, perhaps half a sentence and I'm away. Those days are usually the ones when I write a better blog post (like yesterday) which gets a better response.
I another technique I use is that I don't research too much, or at least I don't research with the sole aim of trying to write a blog. Having this approach allows me to be far more creative. With millions of writers out there, we all touch on similar subjects. The point is, we give the subject freshness and that is why people will read.
I'm gonna stop here because this is becoming like writing a blog!

Hey Marty! You have added some great tips. I too do little research when I'm writing. Unless I'm working on something that requires it, like a review. Freewriting is a great way to "brain dump" everything and go back and edit.

Thanks for the comment, guy.

Hi Kevin!

As it has been already mentioned, it's all about practicing your writing skills and always try to improve them. Also, writing consistently is the best way to practice and keep the ball rolling.

I would also like to add other one that matters to me personally. Whenever I get an positive comment on my blog, I feel good about it and it helps to move forward.

Those good experiences are the ones we need when going gets rough - for example when we don't feel like writing or when it seems no one cares what we write about. You can then realize once again, that what you do actually matters :)

Hi Timo!

There is nothing I love better than seeing great bloggers and readers like yourself comment on my blog. It definitely is a confidence boost and inspires me to produce content that others find useful and fun.

Most bloggers, when they start out, don't get many comments on their early posts. I'm no different. But it it sure helps to see when people interact and like what you do.

That's big for a blogger's confidence. Especially, when their blogging morale is low.

Thank you very much! Yet another comment I'll remember when there is a rainy day and I don't feel like blogging :)

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the reminder about subscribing to your own blog. I recently changed feedreaders and forgot to do just that. Interestingly enough, my blog is a bit off in the feedreader I am using. Hmmm maybe I was meant to read this article??? ;-)

As for blogging with confidence, I also think it comes with time. My confidence in the quality of my work now is much more than it was 10 months ago...even 3 months ago!

You know the old adage - practice, practice, practice! :-)

Absolutely, Michele.

Practice is the only way we'll ever become better in whatever it is we want to become better at. Once a person can see their writing has gotten better, that's where their confidence will grow and spur more great writing.

I love the Zig Ziglar quote you included, "You are the only person on Earth that can use your ability." We all have something unique to offer the world, don't we?

That should boost our confidence, shouldn't it? Nobody else on earth is as good at being me as I am. Be unique. Learn from other bloggers, but never try to become them.

Once I got that concept nailed down, I had all the confidence in the world. Thanks for reminding us of this.

Hey Brad,

You would think offering something unique to the world would be enough for a blogger to gain confidence. But, sometimes, that's not enough.

I totally agree with you on the belief that you should learn from other bloggers, but not copy them.

Hi Kevin

This post is very on topic for me at this time in my blogging journey. I have been very motivated and enjoying my journey.....till about a week or so ago.

Then I did a review and have given myself a hard time. Yes I still get tons of comments on each post I publish. Lots of nice things said about my blog by other bloggers. Seem to get mentioned in other people's roundups most weeks. So what's the problem??!!

None of this brings in income. I enjoy networking and my friends say I am a natural at it. But for me, my blog is a platform for my fledgling business. So I have turned to some experienced marketing friends for help and advice.

Ironically, they don't get heaps of comments, do get lots of traffic. Utilise their time very different to me. I am learning heaps from them. Even about the time spent commenting and tweeting. And have told me that I am progressing well.

It's great to have those who have been blogging/marketing for some time, giving me helpful hints and letting me know what works and what hasn't for them. It is such valuable information and will save me heaps of time.

So last night I got back to working on my goals. Felt so much better and showed me yet again the value of friendship and this amazing community I am so much a part of now.

I in turn am sharing the limited experience I have with some newbies who have been asking questions and in need of some encouragement too.

Hey Patricia,

You indeed have a large community of people you interact with daily. Everywhere I look, you've been there! Everybody doesn't have the talent or patient to do what you do in cultivating relationships. That's a real skill.

Not making any income in the beginning is extremely hard. Even for the more seasoned blogger. Most real bloggers will tell you that. In fact, most bloggers don't make any money in the first year or so. You definitely have to stay the course, especially when you're unmotivated.

You remind me of Jade Craven who is a wiz at connecting with people and networking. I would try and connect with her at her blog, jadecraven.com. She's also on Twitter.

I've been doing this for two years and even now, my income isn't very consistent. However I had advice from Jonathan Fields early on. It was ok to spend the time learning and experimenting, and earn enough money to get by on. Eventually, as you evolve, you'll figure out what your 'great work' is and how to get paid to do it. I'm at the stage now and it was hard, but totally worth it.

Thanks Kevin and Jade

In the past few hours I have had some great advice and offers of help from 2 of my experienced marketing friends. I have met some of the nicest people on the planet since I began blogging.

I so appreciate the input from both of you. Will now go and check out your blog Jade. I plan to keep being patient and persevere. I know I will see it all coming together as I work on my goals.

Thanks for your insight, Jade. Much appreciated!

Kevin, great post! I'm trying to build momentum again and hopefully I'll go back to three posts a week but this week, it's back down to two again.

A lot of people lose confidence in their abilities from time to time but as long as they keep practicing their writing skills, they'll be fine. Takes a bit of a push though :)

I got off to a rough start too, Moon. I didn't feel like blogging at all. But seeing all the great people like you, Alex, Pawel, and the others who churn out awesome content everyday, inspired me to get my ass in gear. Now, I'm more motivated than I've been in months.
